Rare colonial roll top desk 1870
Very rare Australian Cedar Colonial roll top desk, c. 1870. In Cedar, Rose Mahogany and Huon Pine.
This hard-to-find piece will be offered for sale at the Newcastle Antiques Fair, 7th-9th August 2015.
It bears the trade label of Alexander W. Norton. A similar example is illustrated in Simpson and Fahy, Nineteenth Century Australian Furniture.
The desk retains its original leather. It is beautifully made and may have been a private commission: the top slides forward and the leather section tilts for comfort and ease of use. The back is panelled so it could be placed anywhere in a room, not just up against a wall. Had been in the same family since the 19th Century until recently acquired by Colonial Rarities.
Update: This lovely item sold almost immediately at the Newcastle Antiques Fair 2015.
